The bagmen who transport money for organized crime live by a set of rules: no personal relationships, no ties, no womenand never, ever look inside the bag youre carrying. Paul Page was the perfect bagman, despite suffering from a rare brain disorder. But that ended the day he saw a beautiful Mob wife become a Mob widow. Now Paul is going to break every rule hes lived byeven if it means he might be left holding the bag.

"Breathless action, terrific dialogue and strangely moving." --The Times"A real throw-back of a crime novel, full of violence and colorful dialog...exciting and unpredictable...recommended for fans of the more visceral pulp and hard-boiled fiction, like Jim Thompson's 'The Killer Inside Me'." -- --Library JournalOne guess as to which notable deceased writer-director-philosopher raconteur combined these ingredients into the delightfully dizzying, invigorating novel Brainquake, a beach book that storms the reader s defenses like the Normandy invasion (which gets a shout-out here). No, this ain t James Ivory, pal: it s Sam Fuller at full blast, relentlessly advancing a multipronged narrative while throwing restraint to the wind and leaving a Proust-load of movie-madeleines strewn in his wake. (Picture a pastry truck in a 10-car pileup after a French Connection like chase.) --Film Comment"The bravura opening is a knockout...Fuller fans will find it hard to resist." --Booklist"The writing is pulpy and the violence brutal...Fuller explodes a few surprises to keep the plot unpredictable, and his mordant asides on crime and corruption elevate this tale above much standard genre fare." --Publishers Weekly"Classic noir fiction filled with shadowy underworld dealings[,] quick dialogue and rich archetypal characters…Fuller creates the kind of converging narratives and memorable personalities that will seem familiar to any Tarantino fan." ----KirkusOne guess as to which notable deceased writer-director-philosopher raconteur combined these ingredients into the delightfully dizzying, invigorating novel Brainquake, a beach book that storms the reader s defenses like the Normandy invasion (which gets a shout-out here). Review Text

  • By M. D. Ripley on 16 October 2014

Brainquake has a crazy title, a bizarre, emotionally challenged central character who barely speaks, a plot which involves organised crime, laundered money, New York gangsters and absinthe-drinking French Resistance heroes, random violence, double-crosses, triple-crosses, a caring female crime boss, a dedicated black female cop and a ruthlessly efficient hit-man, disguised as a catholic priest, who favours crucifixtion as his modus operandi. Few characters come out of it well, even fewer come out alive and despite its crazy structure and the large amount of disbelief requiring suspension, this is a totally addictive piece of "noir" fiction. The late Sam Fuller was one of the great maverick film makers and there are shades of his "Pickup on South Street" here, as well as a direct reference to his autobiographical war film The Big Red One. On occasion the film-maker gets the better of the novelist, but there is much to admire, be surprised at and be shocked by in this rediscovered pulp masterpiece.

I was intrigued to read this book by the great cover, after reading the preview pages prior to buying I wasn't so sure. A couple of days later I returned to Amazon Kindle store and brought the book after wondering what happened next after the first victims death in the park.I found the book an easy to read story, an interesting but quite central character who has strong pink colored visions during times of stress. There are several double crosses but they do not cause any confusion and even heighten the pace of the story. Based on this book I am looking forward to reading some more of the Hard Case Crime books and other stories by Samuel Fuller.
